A while back I was in a clients home repairing a couple of leaky faucets and a stripped door hinge and the gentleman asked me how I learned to do this type of work. I had to think about if for a moment because I had never received what you might consider formal training in any of the trades such as electrician, plumber, or carpenter. The short response is that I have been a life long do-it-yourselfer.
In about 1978 I stumbled upon a book entitled “The Steel String Guitar” by David Russell Young. About nine months later I had acquired some tools, and with the help of my father-in-law, I completed my first handmade guitar. I have had a home woodworking shop and built and repaired things ever since.
Along the way I worked for a kitchen cabinet company assembling and delivering cabinets. During this time I learned how to install cabinetry and do interior trim a professional I always consulted closely with them and picked their brains for the tricks of the trade.
In 2000 I became the facilities maintenance director for a seventy year old retail musical instrument company with five locations in Oklahoma and Arkansas at the time.
In all my years as a DIYer, remodeler, and woodworker I have strived for results as good as or better than the pros and that is the attitude and level of quality I now bring to my clients as KR the Handyman.
